In Corruption, that voice becomes a weapon for truth as she uncovers the unthinkable: a network of exploitation hiding in plain sight. And in Courage, Cal learns that true power isn't just about speaking up—it's about standing tall, even when the system pushes back.

The subject, while stark, is delicately dealt with throughout the book so you needn’t worry about it being too raw. Finally, it provides a great view of the media’s role in this harrowing subject.

From our first encounter with Ralph, we know exactly who he is, in all his boorish mediocrity... Every woman in the western world has stories about the Ralphs and Waynes she has encountered, and nearly all of us have had the phone conversation shared by Cal and Brigid.

Avant has a knack for describing places and spaces in perfect clarity. I feel as though I could navigate the inner hallways of City Hall and not get lost.

Her description of Cedarmere Street leading down to the lake reveals not only a sleepy neighbourhood, but also Cal’s interior landscape. This book is a delight.

Be prepared to be swept up into this engaging story!

Cal is a go-getter and completely dedicated to her job, so it seems more than unfair that she should have to experience some of the seedy side of politics. Unfortunately, Cal has to wrangle her way around rich and powerful men, who might be well deserving of a thrashing for how the political assistant is treated.

I highly recommend Consumed in Capital City. This was a fast-paced, satisfying read and one I won’t forget.

Will Calista learn to wade through the sexism that is pervasive throughout Capital City politics, or will she cave under the pressure? Before the MeToo Movement, Consumed in Capital City is an eye-opening account of one woman’s journey from journalist graduate to political assistant on the staff of a municipal councillor. Yes, this is a fictional story, but it’s rooted in truth. Ask any woman who enters the political arena, and she will tell you a story like our heroine, Calista. I couldn’t put Consumed in Capital City down and it’s one I recommend every person to read.

The narration is equal parts emotional and descriptive. N.G. Avant hauls the reader into the story through exquisite narration. The emotional tension is taut with just the right amount of drama. The details are lush and tangible. Every thought, taste, touch, and experience are described so the reader becomes a part of the story.

What makes Consumed in Capital City such an incredible piece of fiction is the writing. I’ve read scores of books over the years, and none came close to the instinctual reaction I had to this book. So much emotion poured out of me as I read this book. It’s a worthwhile reading experience. Sure, I had a book hangover, but it’s worth the pain for such a relevant story. Highly recommend!

Builds suspense with elegance, never rushing but never stalling, either.

N.G. Avant’s Corruption in Capital City is a taut, emotionally charged continuation of Calista Caldwell’s journey, digging deeper into the personal and political intricacies first introduced in the series’ debut.

The emotional undercurrent is stronger this time, with themes of isolation, loyalty, and moral conflict taking center stage.

Cal’s single-minded focus, in contrast to the domestic lives growing around her, reveals a quiet ache beneath her resilience. Her discovery of corruption within her own circle forces her to question not only her career, but her identity and core beliefs. Avant crafts this internal conflict with precision and compassion.

Characters evolve meaningfully—Cal’s emotional depth expands, and the people around her are no longer just colleagues but potential threats, confidants, or something more intimate. The slow-burning shift in one friendship into something more is handled with subtlety, offering warmth amid the storm of deceit.

Avant’s writing remains immersive and sharp. Her dialogue rings true, her scenes layered with tension, and her ability to blend the political with the personal makes the stakes feel both globally relevant and intimately human.

Pacing is key here. The novel flows with a sense of urgency, yet it allows space for quiet reflection, letting readers sit with the weight of each revelation. The balance between political intrigue and emotional complexity is spot-on.

Capital City now feels darker, more threatening—a place where power conceals rot. Yet within this setting, Avant builds a compelling story of courage, truth, and quiet rebellion.

Corruption in Capital City isn’t just a political drama; it’s a powerful testament to integrity, friendship, and the unexpected places where love begins to grow.

This story has more teeth and thought-provoking messages than most.

Courage in Capital City presents a well-thought-out and intricate plot that encompasses both criminal cabals and civil servants prepared to sell their souls or sometimes look the other way to enhance their lifestyles, power, and domination over women. Although author NG Avant's book is fiction, it is easy to see the close correlation between the situation in rural Canada and its Indigenous women over the last century. The treatment of Indigenous children by the government and the apathy of law enforcement in investigating missing Indigenous women, as well as actual corruption within the authorities, is well known and is brought out beautifully in this narrative.

The author has created a cast of intelligent, strong, self-motivated, and brave young women unprepared to accept the status quo any longer. Perfectly woven into this story of abuse, trafficking, and courageous fightback are a number of romantic arcs which soften the narrative, give a gentler tone, and remind us that even amidst the dirt and corruption, beauty, happiness, and love can always be found. I do love a nice romance read, but this story has more teeth and thought-provoking messages than most. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
